Power in Practice: Unpacking Culture, Privilege & Philanthropy
About this Event
In this interactive workshop, we'll examine the often-unspoken dynamics of power and culture within the philanthropic sector.
Through an experiential activity, participants will embody behaviors rooted in white supremacy culture... perfectionism, urgency, defensiveness... and map those patterns onto real experiences within nonprofit leadership, board dynamics, grant requirements, and donor relationships.
Our speaker is Shahela Beghum, Program Director for LISCIF of Restore America's Estuaries, who has worked for years to bridge the gap between federal grants and under-resourced environmental organizations.
She is passionate about community resiliency and environmental justice and is currently pursuing a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center. She will help bridge the conversation between the theoretical and our reality and fundraisers.
Our activity was created by Stephanie Stavropoulos, a game designer and educator who specializes in creating transformative play experiences for non-profit organizations and foundations. She currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts' Designing for Social Innovation MFA Program. Her expertise is in social impact games: interactive experiences that integrate sociopolitical events, values and messages into their design and game mechanics.
