Poverty and Tax Conference - SPA Tax and Social Policy Group

The design and operation of tax arrangements are fundamentally interdependent with policies to address poverty, yet research and policymaking in these areas often proceed on separate tracks rather than being effectively joined up.

This event will bring together experts in tax and poverty, alongside social policy academics, economists, third sector advocates and policymakers, to examine the barriers to closer integration and identify practical ways to achieve more coherent approaches.

The conference examines:

· Why is it hard for experts on poverty to get to grips with the implications of tax for poverty (and vice versa!)

· The history of taxation in the management of poverty

· How tax design can affect different groups of vulnerable people differently

· What the UK can learn from other countries

· What knowledge gaps exist requiring further research
