Description
This class will focus on creativity and self-expression while learning key ceramic techniques! Students will have the opportunity to create a small trinket or snack dish. The dish is encouraged to be a self-portrait, but students may choose to create whatever portrait style they desire!
Day One:
One the first day students will begin with a small slab of white clay as the base for their dish. Students will then add a silly mouth built up using coils. After creating a mouth for holding trinkets or snacks, students will then hand build portrait details (eyes, mustaches, noses, jewelry, hair…). Students will use clay studio tools and slip to achieve their desired look. (3 hours)
Day Two:
Students will use studio tools and glaze to add color and shine to their fired ceramic piece. (3 hours)
Learning Goals:
By the end of the course students will learn how to:
Build a slab
Understand appropriate thickness and plasticity for clay building
Use coil technique (slip and score)
Use additional hand building techniques (slip and score)
Use studio tools to create appropriate and unique textures
Use studio tools and glaze to bring their creation to life
Please note that all pieces will be ready for pick up 3-4 weeks after the end of class. An email will be sent to students when their artwork is ready.
About the instructor:
Amber Flores is a former elementary school art teacher turned restaurant owner. She is passionate about all forms of art and expressions of creativity, and her classes are intended to be fun and informative, while giving students a safe and friendly place to explore their creative side!
