Learn the basics of pottery or continue to develop your knowledge of hand-building techniques.
About this Event

During this course you will be introduced to hand-building methods and techniques in ceramics. The tutor will give demonstrations and guide you through different methods including pinch pots, slab and coiling. You will have the opportunity to explore and practice the techniques and experiment with different tools.

You will gain confidence with working in clay and be able to make your own work comfortably after finishing the six weeks. At the final session you will be able to finish each piece by experimenting with glaze. It is important to understand that this is not a technical course about making perfect pieces of pottery (although that’s great too), instead you will be encouraged to experiment, be creative and make something that’s unique to you.

The classes will be calm and therapeutic, with a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

The course is suitable for beginners who want to learn the basics of pottery as well as improvers who would like to refresh their knowledge with some support.

All tools and materials will be provided but please bring an apron or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. You are welcome to bring your own moulds and tools if you have them. Clay will be limited to a specific amount per person and there will be a set number of kiln firings per six week course. A small selection of glazes will be provided by the tutor and students cannot bring their own. Please note: your work will be fired after the course finishes and will be available for you to come and collect at a later date.

Annie Lyle is a ceramic artist living and working in Brighton. After studying mixed media fine art for six years, Annie found clay working as an artist’s assistant in London. She has since been making sculptural and functional objects for galleries and is dedicated to sharing the joy she feels in making them. Annie believes that everyone is an artist and with kindness and encouragement, people can open up and explore their creative side. She is on a mission to help as many people as she can practice self-love and mindfulness through art.
