"Whether they stand 2 feet tall or stretch skyward to 10 feet or more, totem poles embellish gardens year-round. When perennials rest in winter, totem poles provide focal points. When gardens awaken in spring, totem poles complement the flowers and foliage that surround them.
Regardless of their size or style, totem poles catch the eye. And if releasing your inner artistic self while decorating your garden isn’t reason enough to carve out your own link to history, there’s this: In early culture it was said that although totem poles depicted stories, clan lineage, and celebrated events, only the carver knew the true meaning of the totem." Diane Morey Sitton
Join us for our summer time series on making Garden Totem Poles.
In this 6-week series we will cover all the basic skills of handbuilding; pinch pot, coil, soft slab, and hard slab.
Week One: Pinch Pots
Week Two: Coil Pots
Week Three: Soft Slab
W**d Four: Hard Slab
Week Five: Underglaze
Week Six: Glaze
You will have the option to take your pieces home each week to continue refining and adding surface design.
We will have three types of clay you can use to make your totem pieces: our studio white, a deep earthen red, and a dark brown. Once complete we will fire your pieces unglazed to cone 6. Once all the pieces are fired and ready to pick up you have the option to assemble them yourself at home with provided instruction, or attend an assembly class, date to be determined. Totems will be 15"-20" tall.
