This exhibition features two Bay Area artists, Christian Greer and Chris Isner. Christian Greer, a scholar, lecturer, archivist, and artist, makes regular appearances at the Alembic at The Chalice events. Chris Isner's work has also been seen in Alembic's art shows often over the years. Both artists create deep visual worlds with their art, but their medium could not be more different. Greer uses cut paper collage to create mandalas of almost familiar deities from spiritual traditions that escape identification like a word on the tip of your tongue. Isner is a sculptor, manipulating wood as if it was made of water, creating altars to beings, deities, and energies that inhabit the collective unconscious. Viewed together, materiality is a key factor in both artists' work, the texture and relationship of subject to medium as the springboard into an altered state of consciousness. We invite you into the Portals to the realms that each one of these artworks beacons you to enter. The artists will talk at 7pm.
