“E agora, José?
A festa acabou, a luz apagou, o povo sumiu.”
“And what about now, José?
The party’s over, the lights are out, the crowd’s dispersed.”
— Carlos Drummond de Andrade, José (1942)
What if a bar at the edge of a port town became a stage for memories, music, and goodbyes?
Port-Pourri is an immersive, site-specific semi-devised play with live music, inspired by the Brazilian roda de samba—a circle where musicians play while the audience surrounds (and sometimes joins) the sound. In our version, the circle is made of characters: dockworkers, strangers, soldiers, and ghosts.
The story unfolds over one evening, in one place, as a ship prepares to depart. Songs emerge like conversations. Drinks get passed between audience and cast. Some people are arriving. Some are trying to forget. And some have already left.
At its heart, Port-Pourri is about learning to be left behind—and the music we carry after people are gone.
