Port Macquarie Flood Hypothetical
The event will be held at Port Panthers on Sunday, 13th September from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.
The exercise aims to encourage people to think about early evacuation and the actions individuals and communities can take to help emergency services protect life and minimise property damage during flood events.
The scenarios for the “tabletop” exercise will be based on rainfall totals and river heights from previous major flood events, including those experienced in March 2021 and May 2025.
The session will include the presentation of a series of hypothetical flood scenarios to a panel of emergency service representatives, who will explain how their agency would respond to each situation.
The emergency services panel is expected to include representatives from:
• NSW Police Force
• NSW State Emergency Service (SES)
• Port Macquarie-Hastings Council
• NSW Ambulance Service
• NSW Rural Fire Service
• Fire and Rescue NSW
• Department of Communities and Justice
• Marine Rescue NSW
• NSW Reconstruction Authority
• Transport NSW
Following each scenario and feedback from the emergency services panel, community participants will work in small groups to consider and record actions individuals and communities could take to complement emergency services' strategies.
At the conclusion of the exercise, a free lunch will be provided, and participants will have the opportunity to meet and speak with their local emergency services representatives.
The results of the small group discussions will be collated into a report outlining best practice preparation, response, and recovery strategies for the Port Macquarie area.
NSW SES Northern Zone Deputy Commander Tony Day said the exercise was prompted by the significant flood risk faced by parts of Port Macquarie.
“The need for this exercise has been brought about by the significant flood risk that exists for parts of Port Macquarie and the need to foster shared responsibility between the community and emergency services when preparing for, responding to, and recovering from future flood events.”
People wishing to attend are encouraged to register in advance for catering purposes and to receive a copy of the exercise document.
