RUMBA WORKSHOP
Rumba has been gaining renewed interest from dancers around the world who want to learn authentic dance styles, and gain a deeper understanding of the different rhythms found in Salsa and Timba music.
“Rumba is a dance that catches your attention, your whole soul,” explains Vivio. “It’s a feeling — a vibration — that touches people.” (Radio NZ)
Rumba is the heart and soul of Cuban culture as a music and dance form that permeates Cuban life. Granted ‘UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status’ in 2016, this beautiful dance style has a centuries-long tradition that is still evolving today. It has historical links to African dances and Spanish Flamenco, while showcasing elements of contemporary Hip Hop and Breakdancing. Rumba can be seen incorporated into modern dance styles like Salsa/Casino and Rueda de Casino.

HISTORY OF RUMBA CUBANA
Rumba’s rich history can be traced back hundreds of years to the time of slavery in the 16th century, when Africans from different parts of Africa, including Congo, Cameroon and Nigeria, were taken to Cuba by Spanish colonisers. With them, they brought their religion, dancing and drumming traditions, which were outlawed by the Spanish but clandestinely preserved through the generations.
Rumba evolved in the northern regions of Cuba, principally the poor neighbourhoods of Havana and Mantanzas, during the late-19th century from African Abakuá and Yuka traditions and the Spanish-based coros de clave. Rumba loosely means ‘party’ and was danced in the street, at parties and ceremonies by people of African descent, developing into various different styles, such as Yambu, Guaguanco, Columbia and so on. After the Cuban Revolution, it gained folkloric status and is now being widely played, taught and showcased around the world.
