Pop Matters: Promoting Popular Culture in Portsmouth

Large fan gatherings like San Diego Comic Con or London's MCM Convention at the ExCeL would suggest that the celebration of pop culture only takes place in large cities or venues renowned for spectacular events. However, in this talk, I want to discuss and illustrate the numerous ways Portsmouth is a site for media fandom and creative consumption.

The city's annual Comic Con attracts thousands of fans to come meet, discuss, sell, buy and immerse themselves in their favourite entertainment franchises. At other times of the year the city welcomes tourists who come to explore sites and spaces associated with fictional characters and texts such as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who. What all this suggests is that pop culture in all its wonderous forms is relevant to people, the city and its everyday residents.

With examples drawn from a range of local, national and international media, I argue that Pop Matters.
