From Jeff Milo at WDET Latest in Local: “Poor Player” is a band name and it evokes an underdog to root for… Maybe it’s a wobbly record that just keeps spinning, or a guitar picker with callouses built up over years’ worth of playing. Interwoven into the lore of musical traditions and troubadours from folk, Americana, country, and blues, it suggests resilience; something raw that keeps on rolling, a scuffed windmill blade that keeps rotating. For this Detroit-based six-piece, it means embodying the resoluteness of the woeful spirit that catches the wind at its back, or a formerly-broken-but-newly-mended broken heart. It’s the stuff great Americana-folk is made of.
The group blends the twang of country with a bit of rock ‘n’ roll grit. Electric guitars intertwine with the strum of an acoustic, while the rich and rustic timbres of a banjo or mandolin float over the hum of an electric piano. Poor Player is Matt Fredericks (vocals/guitar), Fred Vitale (keyboards/accordion), Stu Tucker (percussion), and Marija Franetovic (vocals). For the release David Roof joins them on guitar and Brian Yamstein on bass.
Frederick’s melodic warbles and country croons thread lyrical ruminations that are inspired by real life events such as wandering across mountain slopes in the Pacific Northwest, memory mash-ups rendering perspectives on world events, large or small scale tragedies, bouts of existentialism. If none of the above, his lyrics feature novelistic imaginations laid out with compelling plots and quirky and/or empathetic characters.

Earthwork Collective artist Jo Serrapere (sarah-pear), a songwriter from Detroit, Michigan, started playing guitar at 23
when seeking out lessons from Delta Blues guitarist, Shari Kane. Shortly thereafter, Jo began writing her own songs while completing her college studies in clinical psychology. She now plays at music venues throughout the United States as well as maintaining a successful psychotherapy practice and raising her delightful daughter.
Whether recreating old classic songs or performing original songs in her own deeply confessional and comic styles, Jo’s music stands original while always reflecting her love of American roots music. Her eclectic writing and performance fuses elements of various modern and traditional folk music,
Delta and electric blues, roots rock, classic and alt-country, garage rock surf and swing.
Jo often performs with her partner, John Devine, where she plays drums and guitar. She also performs regularly with her bands, the Willie Dunns (John Devine, David Roof and Stuart Tucker), Stella! (Jen Sygit and Julianna Wilson) and the LaFawndas (Joel Jackson, Lindsay McCaw, John Devine, Jason Oberliesen and Stuart Tucker). They bring added depth and musical styling to Jo’s original songs as well as classics from such artists as Mississippi John Hurt, Wanda Jackson, Bessie Smith and Tom Waits. Jo is also the founding member of the old-time group Uncle Earl.
