About the Workshop "Exploring Phantom Power(s)"
Condenser microphones need “phantom power” to operate—but phantom powers, weak and strong, are all around us. What powers operate in and on the world, in and on us, that deserve more (or different) attention, naming, narrating, than we have yet given them? From the quantum realm to plant and animal communication, from the inner workings of our beings (psychological, spiritual, and material) to the ways we experience the so-called real world, powers we cannot fully identify circulate everywhere. We will explore some poems that investigate and seek to name phantom powers, and begin some new explorations of our own.
About the Poet
Jeff Gundy’s thirteen books of poetry and nonfiction include, most recently, Wind Farm: Landscape with Stories and Towers (Dos Madres, 2021, creative nonfiction) and Without a Plea (Bottom Dog, 2019, poems). A former Fulbright lecturer in Salzburg, Austria, he was named Ohio Poet of the Year for Somewhere Near Defiance (Anhinga, 2014). His work appears in many journals, including Georgia Review, The Sun, River Teeth, Kenyon Review, Forklift, Ohio, Christian Century, Cincinnati Review, and Terrain.org. He received a major grant from the Seattle Foundation to serve as 2023-25 Writer in (Non)Residence at Bluffton University and is at work on a long-term project with the working title Phantom Power(s), and a volume of new and selected poems.
