"Explorations Bearing Witness"
The Depot presents these three outstanding poets who will contribute, in their own unique ways, to the communal search for a common language for the common good, by sharing with you and each other their witness to the world we live in.
Rilla Askew is best known for her American Book Award-winning novel about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Fire in Beulah, Rilla Askew is the author of five novels, two books of stories, and a collection of creative nonfiction, Most American: Notes from a Wounded Place. Her poetry has appeared in Nimrod, The Working Man’s Hand: Poems of Protest and Resistance, World Literature Today online, and elsewhere. Her most recent novel Prize for the Fire, about Early Modern English writer Anne Askew, was a finalist for the 2023 Oklahoma Book Award.
Nathan Brown is an author, songwriter, and award-winning poet who doesn’t live anywhere in particular. He holds a PhD in English and Journalism from the University of Oklahoma. He served as Poet Laureate for the State of Oklahoma in 2013/14 and travels fulltime performing readings, concerts, workshops and speaking on creativity, poetry, and songwriting. Nathan’s published over 25 books. Most recent is his new memoir, The Fallen Autumn: The Birth of a Vagabond – Book 2. Karma Crisis: New and Selected Poems, was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize and the Oklahoma Book Award.
Quraysh Ali Lansana is author of over twenty books in poetry, nonfiction and children’s literature. Lansana is Applied Associate Professor of English/Creative Writing and Media Studies at the University of Tulsa, where he is also Director of the African American Studies program and the Media Lab. Lansana is Executive Producer of KOSU/NPR’s Focus: Black Oklahoma monthly radio program, which is a recipient of a 2022 duPont-Columbia Award, a 2022 NAACP Image Award, a 2022 Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists Award and was a Peabody Award nominee.
