Join us for our continued discussion of the Poetic Eddas. This session we'll discuss "Thrymskvida" (aka "Thrym's Poem") and if time permits "Volundarkvida" (aka "The Lay of Volund"), two short poems, one humorous the other serious. What thoughts does the poem inspire? Are the symbols and morality still meaningful? What questions do they raise for you? Do you disagree with any commentary?
The Poetic Eddas are the oral literature of Iceland and Norway, written down from 1000 to 1300 by Snorri. The Eddas are a primary source for today's Norse pagan beliefs (aka, Asatru). The poems are a great tragic literature tradition, with vivid descriptions of the emotional states of the protagonists, Gods and heroes alike. The impact of these sagas on world culture is wide-ranging, inspiring works by Richard Wagner and J.R.R. Tolkien.
You may use any translation you like. Comparing translations has proved to be quite informative as we interpret and analyze the poems.
