The Charter Arts Theatre Department, in collaboration with the Charter Arts Music Department, continues its fall season with a focus on original works by professional playwrights. "Ladies, How Dare You!", a musical comedy/farce written by Liv Cummins and Rob Hartmann, with music by Rob Hartmann, will premiere at Charter Arts, November 8-10, 2024.
This production is directed by Kelly Minner-Bickert with music direction by Erica Dickson.
Set in 1913 amidst the suffrage movement, the story’s themes and sentiments of the characters will resonate with contemporary audiences as we find ourselves swept up in the current political landscape. The action is centered around two unlikely traveling companions, wealthy socialite Lucretia Kingsley and her hired hatmaker, immigrant Dorothy Jones, who must make it to the Suffrage Parade in Washington D.C. against all odds – yet the heart of the piece lies in the relationships they develop with the people in the small town where their carriage breaks down. As they form connections and invest in one another’s lives, they begin to question their preconceived notions of what it means to be a woman, what it means to be an American, and what it means to build community. All are affected and eventually inspired to find a new path forward, bravely paving the way for change.
Featuring a rollicking ragtime Americana-flavored score, "Ladies, How Dare You!" uses old-fashioned vaudevillian hijinks, disguises, and Shakespearean mistaken identities to explore themes of gender roles, anti-immigrant sentiments, and urban and rural clashes.
