On Saturday, August 29, I’ll be opening up my porch from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM and welcoming some incredibly talented local musicians as we take part in International Play Music on the Porch Day.
If you’ve never heard of it, I love the story behind it.
Play Music on the Porch Day started in 2014 with a really simple idea: what if, for one day, everything stopped and we all just listened to the music?
That idea caught on.
Today, musicians in more than 70 countries and 1,000 cities around the world take part by stepping outside onto porches, sidewalks, yards and other community spaces and simply playing music. Some people play for a handful of neighbors. Others gather entire communities. There’s no complicated formula behind it. It’s about sharing music, connecting with the people around us, and remembering that music is one of those things that can bring people together no matter where we come from.
I can’t think of a better idea to bring to Hamilton.
One of my favorite things about live music has always been the community that happens around it. You don’t have to know each other. You don’t have to have anything in common. Sometimes all it takes is a porch, a few chairs and a good song to make someone stop, stay awhile and connect.
I wanted the porch to have an even bigger purpose.
Throughout the day, we’ll be collecting donations for the Hamilton High School Band program.
Access to music in our schools matters.
Music education is so much more than learning to play an instrument. It gives young people a place to belong. It teaches discipline and teamwork. It builds confidence and creativity. It creates friendships, memories and opportunities that can stay with a student long after they leave the classroom.
For some kids, the band room is the place where they find their people. For others, picking up an instrument may introduce them to a talent or passion they never knew they had.
Every student deserves the chance to have that experience, regardless of what their family can afford.
So on August 29, come pull up a chair.
Come for one musician or stay for the afternoon. Bring a friend. Meet a neighbor. Support some incredibly talented people from our local music community. And if you’re able, help us make sure music continues to be accessible to the young people coming up behind them.
Talented local musicians will be playing throughout the day, with donations collected to benefit the Hamilton High School Band program.
There’s something pretty special about knowing that while music is being played on one porch here in Hamilton, people all over the world will be doing the exact same thing.
One porch. One community. One day connected through music.
See you there.
