About this Event

Event description

There are platypus living in the rivers and creeks of the Upper Murrumbidgee region. Platypus and rakali are top predators in these waterways. By keeping track of how many there are, we can learn how healthy the water is. You might not have seen one, but there could be a platypus living closer to your home than you think.

Late winter is the best time to spot platypus. During this time, they spend more time feeding, and the males become more active as they get ready for the breeding season.

Waterwatch runs group surveys in August at selected rivers across the ACT region. These surveys help us learn more about our platypus population. There are 24 bookable surveys at 6 locations accross the region.

You can join as many surveys as you like, and you don’t need any experience. Each survey takes about 2 hours. This includes meeting at the site, getting a short briefing, walking to the spotting area, watching for platypus for 1 hour, and then returning to hand in your data sheet. Usually, one or two people take part at each survey site.

Surveys are held at Cooma Creek, Mittagang Crossing, Point Hut Crossing, the Queanbeyan River, Jerrabomberra Wetlands, and the Lower Molonglo. The map shows the general survey locations. After you book, you’ll get an email with details on what to bring, what to wear, how to get there, and where to meet.
