Discover how simple and rewarding it can be to grow more of the native plants you love. This hands-on workshop, led by Mt. Cuba’s Conservation and Research team, introduces practical techniques for propagating plants from both seeds and cuttings.
🥬Learn the ethics of collecting wild seed, explore the fundamentals of seed biology, germination, and storage, and gain confidence in vegetative reproduction by practicing when and how to take, prepare, and root cuttings.
🥬Participants leave with prepped pots of native seeds and cuttings from Mt. Cuba’s garden, along with a bio-dome to continue growing at home.
This workshop is ideal for gardeners looking to expand their native plant collections sustainably and cost effectively. Gain practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and take-home materials that set you up for success long after the class ends.
Lunch is included each day of class.
This program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center two Fridays: 5/8 and 5/15.

About the Instructor:
James Rockwell is the Greenhouse & Nursery Manager at Mt. Cuba Center. He earned a BS in Environmental Horticulture and Agribusiness Management from Virginia Tech. James oversees our conservation research greenhouse where he facilitates propagation work for our gardens, external collaborators, and industry partners. Prior to joining Mt. Cuba Center in 2017, James gained experience at Longwood Gardens. His favorite aspect of working in the greenhouse is observing plants in all life stages, from seed to mature plants.
Lindsey Laban is the Conservation Propagator at Mt. Cuba Center where she propagates plants for Mt. Cuba’s gardens, natural lands, and conservation partners. She enjoys figuring out how to propagate rare and unusual plants and is fascinated by the different ways plants germinate in nature. Prior to working at Mt. Cuba, Lindsey was the lead horticulturist at Stoneleigh: A natural garden in Villanova, where she also oversaw the greenhouse and nursery operations. When not tending to her plants, Lindsey enjoys bird watching and hiking through the woods.
