Plant Communities of Piedmont and Catawba Indians, SCNPC Elective 10.2.26

About this Event

This class begins with a lecture and discussion followed by field activities in the Piedmont with special emphasis on the Catawba Nation to include Piedmont savannah, slate belt, and floodplains. The lecture/discussion will cover the primary natural communities of the Carolina Piedmont with a focus on the geologic, soils and topographic features of each community that create the unique suite of plants and animals. The environmental gradients will be observed based on changes in plant composition and factors such as soil depth, slope position, and aspect. As part of this class, you will receive Robert Carter, Catawba Nation Ethnobotany.
Your instructor, Robert Carter, Ph.D., is a Forestry and Wildlife Agent serving six counties and the Catawba Indian Nation. He is the author of Catawba Nation Ethnobotany.

Please Note: All classes are open to the public. If you would like to pursue the South Carolina Native Plant Certificate Program, all core classes plus 4 electives are required for completion.

Some classes in the certificate program include fieldwork and can be physically demanding We may use hiking trails with moderate difficulty. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to hike 1-2 miles without difficulty or assistance over terrain with steep sections, where footing will be uneven, with frequent tree roots, rocks, muddy areas and fallen tree trunks to climb or step over. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are required.
