Planning for Habitat in Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture improves soil health, sequesters carbon, and enhances water quality—but it also plays a key role in supporting biodiversity. By creating and preserving habitat, these practices strengthen ecosystems and wildlife populations.

This workshop highlights the work of Tina and Orion Weldon of TerraPurezza, who use multi-species livestock (sheep, chickens, and pigs) to produce high-quality meat while restoring the land. Their efforts at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch demonstrate how agriculture and conservation can go hand in hand.

Join us at Luck Ranch to learn from the Weldons and educators from SPI, the Wildlife Habitat Federation, the Audubon Society, and USDA NRCS.

INSTRUCTORS:

Dr. Ken Mix is the Program director of The Small Producer Initiative at Texas State University and currently teaches entomology, soil health, and crop production, with active research on small producer needs, soil, and water resources. He is a former vegetable producer and currently runs SKM Homestead, a small livestock and mixed produce 50-acre farm in Fentress, Texas.

Wildlife Habitat Federation provides on-the-ground restoration, management, and generational sustainability of prairie habitat for the conservation of soil, water, air and wildlife.

National Audubon Society employs science, advocacy, education, and conservation efforts to protect birds and their habitats. Their Conservation Ranching Program assists farmers and ranchers in promoting biodiversity and improving ecosystem functions through sustainable grazing practices.
