A legend of Romanian folklore, who for over 35 years has brought audiences to their feet, the ethnofolkloric ensemble Plăieșii is coming to Montreal for the very first time as part of their anniversary tour, “PLĂIEȘII – 35.”
This milestone tour celebrates the 35th anniversary of the ensemble’s founding on January 15, 1989. This year, the ethnofolkloric ensemble Plăieșii will perform 26 shows in 9 countries, reaching an audience of approximately 20,000 spectators across two continents.
Authentic folklore and the most popular songs from the ensemble’s repertoire will feature in the tour’s performances and on a new anniversary album, which will be launched on this special occasion.
“This anniversary year is a time for long-awaited reunions! At this stage of maturity, we are excited to share with our beloved audience all the beauty we’ve managed to preserve and create since the ensemble’s founding. We warmly invite you to celebrate with us!” says Nicolae Gribincea, the ensemble’s founder.
---------------------------------------------------------
The Plăieșii ethnofolkloric ensemble was founded in 1989 in Chișinău. It consists of 14 members—7 vocalists and 7 instrumentalists. The ensemble’s repertoire features authentic folklore, traditional songs, and men’s dances specific to the Bessarabian region. Through their artistic endeavors, Plăieșii actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage.
A significant portion of the Plăieșii repertoire includes traditional men’s carols, which, in December 2013, became part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity. This was the first element of Bessarabian cultural heritage protected by UNESCO, to which the Plăieșii ensemble made a considerable contribution.
