About this Event
Sham is short for Show + Jam, which is exactly what it is. First you watch. Then, if you want, you play.
The show
Two acts open the night.
The first is short form: fast games, tight rules, hard cut-offs. If a scene isn't working, it's over in thirty seconds. If it is working, it's over in thirty seconds anyway. This is the part where the audience shouts things and the performers have to live with it.
The second is long form: one suggestion from the audience, then a single interconnected piece built out of it. Characters return. Scenes fold back on each other. Nothing is written down, and by the end it somehow looks like it was.
Roughly an hour of comedy, none of it planned, none of it repeatable.
The jam
Then we bring out the hat.
Anyone who wants a go writes their name on a slip of paper and drops it in. We draw names, call two or three people up at a time, hand them a suggestion, and they play a scene. That's it. That's the whole format.
You don't need experience. You don't need a character worked out, a funny voice, or a plan. The people already on stage are there to make you look good, and a scene that falls apart is one of the more reliable laughs of the night. Some of the best moments at a jam come from someone who has never done this before and decided tonight was the night.
If you'd rather stay in your seat, stay in your seat. Not putting your name in is a completely normal way to attend. Plenty of people come, watch, laugh, and go home, and the show works exactly the same for them.
Who this is for
Improvisers looking for stage time. People who did a workshop once and want to try again. People who have never been near a stage and are curious what happens if they were. Anyone who wants a good Saturday night out with strangers who are all in on the same thing.
