From the earliest pro football and hockey teams to groundbreaking facilities like Duquesne Garden and the Civic Arena, Pittsburgh has often led the way in sports. Local historian Mark Fatla documents the history of Pittsburgh's professional football, hockey and basketball venues. He will guide attendees through that history with dozens of historic images and an engaging lecture.
Mark Fatla is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and the Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA). He has received numerous awards, including the 2025 Rimmel Award from the Allegheny City Society for his contributions to Northside history. Using writing and research skills developed during his years as a lawyer and as executive director for several community development non-profits, he has authored feature cover stories for the Pittsburgh City Paper and alternative weekly newspapers in Baltimore and Cleveland. His two published books are “Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks” and “Pittsburgh’s Historic Stadiums and Arenas”. A lifelong baseball fan, he lives on Northside in an 1870 house just a short walk from the site of many of these historic sports venues.
