Pine bark beetles are a common pest of natural and planted pines in South Carolina. While the southern pine beetle is the most notorious of the native pine beetles in our state, several other species are also common. Ips bark beetles and turpentine beetles often attack weakend or stressed pine trees, contributing to tree death.Dr. David Coyle, Clemson Extension Forest Health Specialist, will discuss the different native pine bark beetles in South Carolina and what landowners and land managers can do for effective management. He will also discuss the impact land management practices and storms have on pine bark beetle populations.
