About this Event

Workshop Details

In this workshop, we shall be exploring and learning the foundations of making pigment, paint and pastels. We will be using foraged goodies such as stones, earth, clay, iron and shells that can be found locally or elsewhere in the UK, as well as looking at bought sustainable pigments.

There shall then be a chance to take part in the processes of turning stones into a pigment and then into a watercolour. There shall be opportunities to try out different types of stones, rocks and clays to see how each one is different in consistency and potential colour.

A new addition to this workshop is the making of earth pastels, which we will make from the stones and clays ground during the workshop.

Throughout the day, you will be able to try out these freshly created paints and see the colours of place appearing in front of you. Depending on how much is found and made during the day, course participants will be able to go home with a selection of paints and pastels to further experiment with.

Suitable for complete beginners and/or experienced art makers who would like to develop their skills in making art materials from the local environment.,

About the Artists

Old Mill Arts is a Dumfries and Galloway-based, multidisciplinary learning project aiming to empower creative capacities both individually and collectively.
In their studio, through workshops and during projects, Lucy and Edward explore the hidden profundity of hand-making creative materials. Through practising and sharing these age-old crafts, they hope to remember parts of shared culture eclipsed by mass production, and to celebrate the rich history of the handmade arts.

Lucy and Edward are both practising artists, almost exclusively using their own handmade art materials to create their work. Discover Edward's work on Instagram @ofalderandoak and Lucy's work @lucy._._.lee
