⭐We invite you to join the fifth workshop organised around P.I.E. (Performative Impro Encounters).
This time with the great improviser Marlene Aigner.
Besides our monthly Instant Composition evenings in Punctum, we want to encourage everyone to dive in the world of performing improvisation.
Feel welcomed to this series of workshops led by inspiring international improvisers.
Description:
"Soundpainting is a multidisciplinary sign language for musicians, dancers, actors and visual artists, consisting of more than 1500 gestures, to compose pieces in real time. It was created by composer Walter Thompson in 1974 and has spread all over the world with currently existing ensembles in over 20 different countries. Like any living language it is being transformed over time through and with the people who practice it. Thanks to its non-verbal nature it is understood universally by anyone who has learned to read the signs.
The workshop will be built up in a way that supports the participant’s personal creativity, both as performer and as composer, starting with playful ways to warm up and get to know each other before we dive right into the language itself, learning some of the signs and their syntax, to then explore the universe of live composition through soundpainting. With one of its most important rules being “wrong and strong”, soundpainting is a great tool for rehearsing ones confidence in decision making while performing, giving an outside structure to hold on to and still leaving enough freedom to interpret and express in whichever way it is desired.
From a composing perspective it offers a great way of understanding what is needed in the moment and how to deal with what is offered by the performers, following the philosophy of “wanting nothing and accepting everything”.
We’ll play around with different structures, settings and spatial relations, so that whoever wants to, can be a soundpainting composer. It is important for me personally to create a space that is free of judgement, to allow people with different experiences and from different artistic backgrounds to feel safe to play."
About Marlene:
"marlene is a dancer, teacher and soundpainting-composer based in vienna. since finishing her bachelor’s degree in contemporary dance at anton bruckner university in linz and folkwang university of the arts in essen, she has been working around austria and germany with several different collectives and choreographers, including doris uhlich and ceren oran. she’s a founding member of the vienna soundpainting collective, a group of 15 musicians and dancers, with whom she has been working for the past three years continuously. her interests range from alternative performance practices and compositional tools to community building exchanges from and within street and club culture."

Who is it for?: this workshop is for everyone who is curious about instant composition and improvisation-based practices and comfortable with improvising in any chosen discipline (music, dance, spoken word, acting, puppetry etc.), or brave enough to try it out
When?: 31st of January & 1st of February, 10:00 - 16:00 (one hour lunch break)
