A series of five 2hr webinars on TUESDAYS over 5 weeks (see below) focused on using PICCOLO to engage parents to support child development
About this Event

This 5-webinar series, presented by PICCOLO trainers and researchers Tasha Olson and ([email protected]) and Shannon Mitchell, with support from PICCOLO developers Lori Roggman and Mark Innocenti, will teach you how to observe and use PICCOLO in your home visiting program to more effectively engage parents, build on their strengths to support their child's development, improve visit quality, and increase positive parent-child interactions.

PICCOLO webinar series (all 9:30 - 11:30 AM Mountain Time):

Webinar-1 - What PICCOLO measures: Specific developmental parenting behaviors that support early child development and well being.

Webinar-2 - Basics of PICCOLO: How PICCOLO was developed, how it is set up, how to observe video and score it (short clips), and how to interpret it.

Webinar-3 - Preparing to Use PICCOLO: Practice to get reliable, planning to use the measure, and practicing observational feedback to caregivers.

Webinar-4 - Implementing PICCOLO Effectively: How to use PICCOLO as a coaching tool by responding to caregiver strengths, planning home visit activities to build on these strengths, and improving program impact and quality.

Webinar-5 – PICCOLO observation practice, consensus scoring, and feedback.

Zoom links will be sent to participants in advance of the webinar date.

Print and electronic materials will be provided, including the book Developmental Parenting, the PICCOLO User's Guide, and a packet of protocol forms. We recommend that programs with participating staff also obtain the PICCOLO Training DVD for their program.

Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO):

The Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO) is a reliable, valid measure of observable, developmentally supportive parenting behaviors with children age 4-60+ months, developed with over 2,000 diverse low-income families. PICCOLO scores in the early years predict better outcomes in the school years. The PICCOLO helps home visitors observe a wide range of parenting behaviors and provide positive feedback to encourage parents to find other opportunities for these interactions with their children.

Working with children with disabilities? The PICCOLO predicts better outcomes through childhood in both typically developing children and those with disabilities or delays.

Workshop presenters:

Tasha Olson, PhD ([email protected]) and Shannon Mitchell ([email protected]) have worked closely for several years as a PICCOLO researchers, practitioners, and trainers with Lori Roggman, PhD ([email protected]) and Mark Innocenti, PhD ([email protected]), researchers and authors of Developmental Parenting, PICCOLO, and HOVRS.

Virtual workshop format: Five 2-hour webinars presented over a 5-week period

Our 2-hour webinars are interactive and require assigned learning activities before each webinar and participation during each webinar. Learning activities include readings and responses, self-reflection about practices and perspectives, video observations, writing positive feedback statements or reflections, practicing with a measure, or other activities. Each series is equivalent to a 2-day workshop.

For the most effective use of either PICCOLO or HOVRS, we recommend the Developmental Parenting Practices series in addition to the series on the measurement tool.

PLEASE BE AWARE:

• There are no refunds or make-up sessions for missed webinars

•Cancellations at least 3 business days prior to the workshop will be reimbursed minus eventbrite fees

• Webinar materials may not be disseminated. We will not record and do not allow you to record webinars

•To implement PICCOLO: Each program must establish reliability between 2 or more observers who meet agreement criteria on 4 or more observations (detailed guidance in Webinar #4). Our training webinars include opportunities to practice observations and get feedback but do not include reliability testing (contact us if you need it).

•A Certificate of Training Completion requires attendance at ALL webinars, webinar participation, and completion of ALL learning activities.

What Developmental Parenting is about: Developmental parenting refers to parent behaviors that support children’s early development and also to an approach to home visiting that facilitates developmentally supportive parenting. Our training is based on practices described in the book, Developmental Parenting: A Guide for Early Childhood Practitioners by Lori Roggman, Lisa Boyce, and Mark Innocenti, (Brookes Publishing, 2008) and informed by recent research on home visiting effectiveness.

To effectively promote developmental parenting, practitioners need tools and strategies to promote interactions that are known to support children’s early development and to encourage what parents already do in their daily lives to support their children’s development. The HOVRS and PICCOLO tools were developed for home visiting practitioners and related professionals. Each require similar skills and strategies for using the tools to increase the quality and impact of home visiting. These tools, skills, and strategies work with parents from diverse ethnicities and backgrounds and have been used in settings in home visiting and similar parenting support contexts around the world.
