Andrew Wilcox - Piano Andrew is one of Hartford’s rising young musicians. Originally from Boylston, MA, Andrew has proven himself to be a talented young pianist, with a passion to learn, grow and play. After moving to Hartford at age 18, Andrew quickly sought out his elders and began building relationships with them. These relationships eventually turned into mentors and employers and Andrew was seen frequently alongside many of these musicians including Haneef Nelson, Nat Reeves, Yoron Israel, Rob Zapulla, Jonathan Barber, Alex Tremblay and Matt Dwonszyk.
A respectful student, Andrew was a student of Rick Germanson, Ralph Peterson, Orrin Evans, and the late great Stanley Cowell. Each introduced Andrew to other musicians, but Ralph Peterson introduced Andrew to Jazzmeia Horn, a musician who would time and time again give Andrew chances to prove himself. The most notable test was when Andrew was called as a last minute sub at the Newport Jazz Festival alongside Ms. Horn at the Newport Jazz Festival.
Andrew is a frequent performer in the Northeastern United States where he is a regular member of the Haneef Nelson Quintet and Ed Byrne Quartet, among other groups. In addition, Andrew fronts his own trio and sextet that perform his original compositions and arrangements.
Matt Dwonszyk - Bass Matt Dwonszyk is an accomplished bassist, composer, arranger and educator from Rocky Hill, CT. He graduated from the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz studying under his mentor and world-renowned bassist, Nat Reeves. Matt then went on to get his Masters degree from SUNY Purchase College. He has been living in Brooklyn, New York for the past five years but still is frequently back home in Connecticut to perform.
Matt has shared the bandstand with world renowned jazz musicians such as Steve Davis, Harold Mabern, Jazzmeia Horn, Bennie Wallace, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Herlin Riley among many others. In 2018, Matt toured through Russia apart of the Rainy Days Jazz Festival. He frequently performs at some of the top jazz clubs in New York City including Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club, Smoke and the Blue Note. Matt’s debut recording, “Wonderful World,” was released May of 2019. His latest recording, “A Year and a Day,” was released in 2022. He continues to perform with his group, the Dwonztet, featuring some of today’s top jazz musicians.
Akin Hobson - Drummer Akin Hobson was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Graduated from Lakewood High school. Akin studied jazz performance at Cuyahoga community college in Cleveland, Ohio under Stephen Enos and private teacher Jim Rupp. He then transferred to the University of Hartford to finish his education at the Jackie McLean institute under the instruction of Javon Jackson where he studied with drummers Eric McPherson and Jason Tiemann and graduated with a bachelors. Akin has played many venues in Cleveland such as the Bop Stop, House of blues and Blue Jazz in Akron Ohio. In Hartford he’s played with various groups playing different styles from rock, r&b, funk/fusion, and jazz performing with Javon Jackson, Haneef Nelson, Zwelakhe Duma Bell le Pere, Andrew Wilcox, Michael Carabello, Austin Phillips, Wayne Escoffery, After School Special, Mixed Company, and many more.
