Pi Day in the Park is a celebration of community connection, gifting, pastries, and math! Each year we ask people to bake a homemade pie (or two, or three) that we give out slices of to the community in central park on March 14.Why: The organizers want to strengthen authentic community connections that don't involve commercialization of relationships. Think about how great it would be to visit a friend and when you walk in the door they offer you a fresh slice of warm pie they just cooked. You can share this same feeling to your fellow community members. Also... pie is just delicious.
Pie slice giveaways are in Durham Central Park on the Pavillion side of Foster St just before the Food Hall.
Ok, I'm in, What do I need to do?
1. Bake a pie (or more!)
2 (optional) Make a label with ingredients, Name Your Pie, and put your name on it if you want credit 🙃
3. Drop it off at the park around 4pm on Thursday. We're usually there for a few hours, or until the pie runs out!
4. If you're not able to drop it off, let me know and I can coordinate to pick it up Wednesday or Tuesday in Durham
We will handle the table, places, utensils, signs, and garbage pickup. And handing out slices.
Any suggestions for pies?
Well. You can go a few different ways here: bake a classic, or a recipe handed down from one of your elders, or get creative and wacky and try something experimental that you find online. Heck, you could even bake something from an AI generated recipe.
Pies don't all have to be sweet, but we won't have a way to keep things warm. So keep that in mind if you go for something savory.
Do I need to hang around and hand out pie?
Nope. But you are absolutely welcome to stick around and see how much people enjoy a random slice of pie on pi day. It really is delightful.
What about the math thing?
Pi day is celebrated internationally on 3/14, an approximation of the math symbol "pi". If you want to contribute with math facts or puns it's a great way to engage people in conversation.
