An immersive one-week program exploring optics, lasers, light-based technologies, and hands-on photonics experiments.
About this Event

Photonics: Lenses to Lasers is an immersive one-week summer program designed for motivated high-school and undergraduate students interested in physics, engineering, and light-based technologies.

Over five engaging days, students will explore the science and engineering of generating, controlling, and detecting light. Beginning with the fundamental properties of light, participants will investigate lenses, focal length, optical systems, polarization, interference, diffraction, reflection, refraction, total internal reflection, optical fibres, and lasers.

Through interactive lessons, demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and laboratory activities, students will make optical measurements and gain practical experience with equipment and techniques used in modern optics laboratories. Participants will explore how telescopes, microscopes, fibres, imaging systems, and lasers allow scientists and engineers to observe, measure, communicate, manufacture, and make discoveries beyond the limits of ordinary human vision.

The course also introduces the applications of photonics in healthcare, telecommunications, scientific research, sensing, precision manufacturing, quantum technologies, energy, and next-generation computing. Students will learn about academic and career pathways across physics, electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, optics, and photonics while engaging with faculty members, graduate researchers, senior undergraduate students, and like-minded peers.

About the AEMS Academy

The AEMS Academy, established through the Atomic Energy Materials & Systems (AEMS) research cluster at the University of Toronto, offers educational programs designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of engineers, scientists, researchers, and technology leaders.

Through hands-on learning, interdisciplinary STEM education, exposure to cutting-edge research, and engagement with expert mentors, students gain insight into the scientific and engineering challenges shaping the future of technology and society.

The AEMS Academy operates independently of the University of Toronto’s DEEP and CREATE outreach programs.
