Start outside Glazer’s working with daylight and flash, then head inside to the Westcott space to shape studio-style portraits

Take your portraits beyond natural light and learn how off-camera flash can completely transform the way you shoot. Join photographer Jake Collins for this hands-on lighting workshop that starts outdoors and finishes in Glazer’s Lighting Department, giving you real-world experience in two very different shooting environments.

The session begins outside, where Jake will demonstrate how to blend flash with available daylight to create clean, natural-looking portraits with depth and control. Learn how to balance ambient exposure, position your light effectively, and confidently work with flash on location without making your images look overly “lit.”

Then head indoors to explore a simple and effective studio-style setup designed to create polished portraits with minimal gear. Jake will break down the essentials of shaping light, choosing modifiers, and building a lighting workflow that’s approachable, flexible, and easy to recreate on your own.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Jake Collins is a professional photographer, educator, and product specialist for Westcott. He specializes in portrait, commercial, and event photography. Jake graduated from the Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology in 2010 with a degree in Commercial Photography. After graduating from college, Jake started as an entry-level photographer at one of the largest portrait studios in Toledo, Ohio. In a short time, Jake worked his way up and became the head photographer and Studio Manager. From there he became a corporate photographer and worked at Marathon Petroleum’s World Headquarters. Now at Westcott Jake is part of the Product Development team. You can find him testing new products for consumers, giving tech support, and traveling around the U.S. teaching customers how to use Westcott’s line of products.
