Photobook Talk: Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo — El pez muere por la boca
About this Event
Please note RSVPs are required due to space limitations.
Join photographer Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo for a presentation of his photobook, El pez muere por la boca / The Fish Dies by Its Mouth.
Created over eight years in Rincón del Mar on Colombia’s Caribbean coast and Bahía Solano on the Pacific, the project examines the complex relationship between fishing communities and the illegal drug trade. In these coastal regions, traditions of fishing, music, dance, agriculture and celebration coexist with the pressures of narcotrafficking, paramilitary violence and displacement.
The work explores resilience and resistance in territories shaped by rich cultural traditions, while confronting the pressures of violence, paramilitary presence, and drug trafficking.
Through photography, performance, and community collaboration, everyday life, memory, and conflict come together in the shifting space between sea and land.
During the talk, Escobar-Jaramillo will share photographs from the book and discuss his long-term relationships with the communities.
A conversation and audience Q&A will follow the presentation.
This event will take place in the Tim Hetherington Photobook Library, located on the second floor of the Bronx Documentary Center at 614 Courtlandt Avenue, Bronx.
