Photo Projects: Sequencing Workshop

Learn how to arrange your images, whether you’re in the early stages of a project or refining an existing body of work for creating a book, zine, or exhibition. This hands-on workshop introduces the art of photo sequencing. Explore how the order, spacing, and relationship between images can shape narrative, rhythm, and resonance.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll break down what sequencing is and how it works, from understanding how viewers naturally move through a body of work to using that knowledge to guide, surprise, and engage them. You’ll explore key concepts like emotional pacing, visual flow, chronology, and the powerful ways images influence one another, gaining insight into how meaning is created not just within a single photograph, but between them.

This workshop is highly interactive and encourages active experimentation. Participants will work directly with printed images (your own or provided) to practice editing, grouping, and sequencing in a tactile, intuitive way. Through a series of guided exercises, you’ll learn how to refine a selection of images, identify key anchor points within your work, and begin constructing a compelling sequence from beginning to end.

We’ll also explore broader structural approaches and how to shape a project with a clear vision. You’ll learn how to create a sense of movement that carries a viewer through your work. Along the way, you’ll receive feedback and collaborate with others. This workshop will give you practical tools and new perspectives to help you present your images with clarity and intention.

Participants are encouraged to bring small printed images (approximately 4x6) to work with during the session, though materials will also be provided.

This workshop builds on the session, but prior participation is not required.

About the instructor:

Brady Fullerton (he/him) is a lens-based artist and academic whose work explores trauma, masculinity, isolation, mental health, addiction, and beauty through the quotidian and mundane. Brady holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and uses art to explore philosophical questions and navigate his mental health. His award-winning photographic work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, online, and in print. Brady is deeply committed to his community and serves on the boards of the Exposure Photography Festival and TRUCK Contemporary Art. He is currently working on several projects, including Nowhere, a photographic exploration of trauma and memory in his hometown of Drumheller, Alberta. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Calgary Arts Development generously fund this work.
