Photo Book Club
About this Event
What are we?
Our Photo Book Club is a monthly gathering for photographers, artists, designers, and photo book enthusiasts to explore contemporary photography through books, hosted by Mathea Millman of Antihero Press.
Each month, we choose a new theme and invite participants to bring a photobook, zine, or publication that connects to the topic. Together, we'll share books, discuss ideas, and explore how sequencing, design, and storytelling shape the way we experience photography.
No expertise is required. Whether you're a seasoned collector or simply curious about photobooks, everyone is welcome.
Event theme:
Photography is often approached with seriousness, but humor can be just as powerful a tool for observation, critique, and connection.
For this month's book club, we'll explore photobooks that use wit, irony, absurdity, playfulness, or satire to challenge expectations and offer new ways of seeing.
How does humor function within the photobook format, and what happens when photography doesn't take itself too seriously?
Please take note of our event rules:
- If you sign up and need to cancel, please do so at least 48 hours in advance.
- Jump in and share your thoughts - this event is all about participation, it's not a lecture. We're here for open discussion so expect to get involved.
- This is a no-promo zone. We want a safe space for artists, creators and photo book lovers to connect, so please refrain from pitching or promoting your own work. Feel free to share personal insights respectfully, but keep the focus on discussion, not self-promotion.
- Bringing a book is encouraged but not required. We will be discussing books and there are books available at Bildband if you would like to use one for our chat. Additionally, feel free to share a book you might have found online if you don't have a physical copy.
