Resonance & Clay: Craft Your Own Ceramic Acoustic Amplifier
Unplug. Create. Amplify. Ever wonder how the shape of a vessel can transform a sound wave? Join us for a unique, hands-on workshop where ancient craft meets modern device. In this session, you will design and sculpt a functional ceramic phone amplifier—a beautiful, battery-free dock that naturally boosts your phone’s volume using nothing but physics and raw clay.
Whether you want to stream your favorite podcasts while cooking, blast music in your workspace, or give a truly unique handmade gift, this workshop offers the perfect blend of utility and artistry.
What to Expect
No pottery experience? No problem. Our instructor will guide you step-by-step through the hand-building process using pinching, coiling, and slab techniques.
The Anatomy of Sound: We’ll start with a quick, fun demonstration on acoustic design. You’ll learn how different shapes—like a megaphone horn or a hollow dome—trap, reflect, and project sound waves.
The Sculpting Phase: You’ll get your hands dirty shaping the main body of your amplifier. You'll customize the phone slot to perfectly fit your specific device (even with the case on!).
Personalized Detailing: Once the structure is sound, the creative freedom is yours. Texture the exterior, add sculpted feet, carve intricate patterns, or keep it sleek and minimalist.
🛠️ Workshop Details & Logistics
Duration: 2 hours (plenty of time to build, socialize, and refine your piece).
What’s Included: High-quality stoneware clay, specialized sculpting tools, glazing services, and both kiln firings.
What to Bring: Bring your smartphone! We will use it to measure exact dimensions while the clay is wet to ensure your phone slips in perfectly. Note: We will also factor in the 10-13% shrinkage rate that happens during the firing process.
What to Wear: Clay washes out, but we recommend wearing comfortable clothes and short nails (long nails can make gouging the clay a bit tricky!).
