There are seven Neighborhood Arboreta that were established in mid-2000s through a collaborative effort of neighbors, Trees Atlanta volunteers, and the city. Cabbagetown community members created the Cabbagetown Arboretum and chose to honor the heritage of the neighborhood by featuring trees of Appalachia.
About the Guide: Greg Levine is Trees Atlanta’s Executive Director as of 2023. Greg began his tenure at Trees Atlanta in 1995 when there were only four employees. About Cabbagetown: Cabbagetown is a nationally-recognized historic district, was built circa 1881 as a settlement for people employed at the new Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill. This textile processing mill became the beacon of the neighborhood, and people relocated from North Georgia to get jobs, bringing a distinct Appalachian culture to the neighborhood with hem. More than a century since Cabbagetown’ s founding, the cotton mill, which closed in 1977, has been renovated into the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts, and is still a significant part of Cabbagetown’ s identity.
