About this Event

The Greensferry Stream and Floodplain Restoration project aims to restore Proctor Creek and the Greensferry Tributary to a more natural, functional system by reconnecting the stream to its floodplain and removing as much of the existing concrete channel as feasible. The project seeks to reduce stormwater impacts and combined sewer overflows by increasing on-site flood storage, improve water quality, and enhance hydraulic, geomorphic, and habitat complexity for fish and macroinvertebrates. It emphasizes recreating historic channel patterns and floodplain processes, incorporating instream structures, and establishing diverse native aquatic, riparian, wetland, and upland vegetation across a floodplain with varied topography. In parallel, the project prioritizes protecting cultural and historic resources, respecting adjacent landowners and stakeholders, and supporting the City of Atlanta’s vision for an inviting public park with attractive stormwater and riverine amenities for recreation and community use.

The Greensferry project is part of a broader strategy funded by Atlanta’s first publicly issued Environmental Impact Bond (EIB)—a groundbreaking financing tool that supports green infrastructure. Only the second EIB in the United States, following one by DC Water in Washington, DC, this initiative is the first to be offered in the public bond market. The EIB provides $14 million in funding for green infrastructure projects to reduce stormwater runoff, increase flood storage, and improve the quality of life in Atlanta’s Westside neighborhoods.
