Pianist and composer Phillip Golub celebrates the release of Loop 8/9, his new album for Greyfade, with a live performance of two new microtonal works for microtonal piano/keyboard, vibraphone, electric guitar, and synthesizer/electronics.
Loop 8/9 is the third chapter in Golub’s ongoing series of loops, following Filters (2022) and Loop 7 (2025). For Golub, a loop is not a sample or studio technique, but a compositional form: a short cycle of harmony that repeats exactly while opening onto a different musical landscape each time through.
The two pieces on Loop 8/9 each inhabit a tuning system of Golub’s own design—one built from quarter tones, the other derived from just intonation. Within these precisely constructed harmonic frameworks, the ensemble has room to improvise, react, and reshape the music in real time.
Performed by Phillip Golub, Joseph Branciforte, Aaron Edgcomb, and Ty Citerman, the concert brings the project back to the live, collective music-making at the heart of the series: fixed structures becoming living frameworks for ensemble interpretation.
