Please join us for an October Pendleton Heights Orchard Workday!
October is the final push for fall planting and getting the orchard ready for winter.
Planting:
Continue planting native perennials and grasses, watering them well to ensure they establish.
Invasive Species Control:
Continue removing any invasive plants and woody species that are visible.
Fruit Trees & Harvest:
Harvesting: Pick apples like Sundance and pears like Harrow Sweet and Kieffer.
Preserving: This is a good time to preserve the harvest by dehydrating apple slices or making cider.
Other Maintenance:
Native Gardens: Leave old plants standing to provide winter interest, seeds, and shelter for birds and other animals. If you do need to trim unattractive plants, leave the stems 8–24 inches tall to provide nesting cavities for native bees.
Good Housekeeping: Continue to pick up trash, branches, and dead fruit.
Mulch: Finish spreading any remaining mulch.
Watering: Continue to water the trees and plants.
