A scathing and hilarious fusion of classic horror tales and a dark satire of the music industry Brian De Palma’s cult classic Phantom of the Paradise tells the story of aspiring singer-songwriter Winslow Leach (William Finley), who catches the eye of mysterious and reclusive rock impresario Swan (Paul Williams) with his solo cantata based on Faust. Using the time-honored, ethics-free techniques of ruthless businessmen, Swan rips off Leach and has him imprisoned, which eventually leads to his disfigurement. Leach morphs into the hideous Phantom who will haunt Swan’s crowning achievement: his new rock palace, the Paradise. The only remaining bright spot for Leach is the faint hope that Swan will allow the talented young singer Phoenix (Jessica Harper) to perform his cantata.
