Join the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada – Ottawa-Gatineau Branch for a special Petrykivka Painting Workshop Decorating Pumpkins with professional artist Joanne Dero.
Come discover the magic of Petrykivka — one brushstroke at a time!
Petrykivka Painting is one of Ukraine's most beautiful folk-art traditions, celebrated for its vibrant flowers, leaves, berries, and flowing ornamental patterns.
Traditionally, this decorative technique was used to adorn walls, stoves, and household items — believed to ward off evil and sorrow. Some traditional hearth paintings even trace family lineage, turning everyday surfaces into living records of heritage.
Every motif in Petrykivka carries the meaning:
- Flowers & plants – renewal
- Hollyhocks – fame and nobility
- Irises – new beginnings
- Kalyna (viburnum) – family, ancestral roots, vital strength
- Rooster – fire, spiritual awakening, rebirth of nature
- Firebirds & peacocks – light, happiness, prosperity
- Oak leaves – endurance, strength
