Peter Hendrickson presents 'Emerald City Trail: A Walking Guide'

Third Place Books welcomes Peter Hendrickson for a presentation of his exciting new Seattle walking guide, Emerald City Trail: A Walking Guide Through Seattle & Our Olmsted History. The 75-mile premier trail featured in Peter's book can be divided into 12 shorter sections, and highlights distinctive landmarks along the trail–including parks, gardens and buildings–designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers firm.

Each section is easy to access via public transit, with convenient amenities such as public toilets and coffee shops noted along the way, while a variety of return options allow walkers to choose their own adventure. With Emerald City Trail in hand, walkers can connect with the city’s storied past, vibrant communities, and beautiful parks, all while enjoying a flexible, easy-to-navigate urban adventure.

Emerald City Trail offers a unique way to experience Seattle, blending history, culture, and exercise into a continuous journey on foot. With the help of many devoted volunteers, avid walker and history enthusiast Peter Hendrickson crafted this 75-mile signature trail, made up of a dozen sections that highlight the city’s diverse neighborhoods, historic landmarks, and parks—many designed by the Olmsted Brothers in the early decades of the twentieth century. From Phinney Ridge to Rainier Beach and from the beaches along Puget Sound to the shores of Lake Washington, walkers of all abilities can enjoy accessible routes while exploring the city’s green spaces and getting glimpses into Seattle’s cultural and architectural history.

Peter Hendrickson is the Mountaineers Books author of the Emerald City Trail: A Walking Guide Through Seattle & Our Olmsted History (2026). He is a longtime urban walk planner and leader in cities worldwide where he has worked, lived or traveled. Widely published in education and medical research, he is a medical researcher at the University of Washington. He holds the Mountaineers Legend Award for his varied service as a community leader and leads walks for the Seattle Urban Walk Committee. Peter and his wife, Nancy Temkin, live on a small Redmond farm frequented by their 12 grandchildren.
