This adventure takes you to all the highlights that make the Cusco region one of the best places to visit in Peru. You’ll experience the grandeur of Machu Picchu on a day tour with a visit to many of the places in Sacred Valley that affords travelers a great sense of the local culture, cuisine, and people. Once acclimatized, you will then visit the Ausangate region where the highest peak lies by the same name. ITINERARY
DAY 1
Arrival in Cusco
We pick you up at Cusco Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Ollantaytambo. You will have the rest of the day to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.
DAY 2
Tour of Machu Picchu
We pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Ollantaytambo train station. The train ride takes 1.5 hours to get to Aguas Caliente. You take the 30-minute bus ride to get to Machupicchu. The tour in Machupicchu will take 2 hours. After the visit, you will return to Aguas Caliente for lunch. Thereafter, you take the train back to Ollantaytambo where you will have the transfer back to your hotel. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.
DAY 3 Sacred Valley Tour Day 1
We will visit three of the most interesting places around the Sacred Valley: (1) Ollantaytambo - known as the last Incan city where we visit the archeological site and remaining ruins of the city; (2) Moray - an incredible geological formation that was used by the Incas for agricultural purposes and (3) Salt Mines of Maras - one of the most beautiful landscapes around the Sacred Valley. Overnight in Ollantaytambo.
DAY 4 Sacred Valley Tour Day 2
We visit two other landmarks around the Sacred Valley that connect you to the local community: (1) Chinchero - a beautiful town with a pre-Inca origin where you learn about the weaving process and natural dying; (2) Pisac - an incredible town in the mountains with colonial architecture and an area famous for the artisans and the handicraft market. Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 5 Cusco City Tour
We will start the day with a visit to four archeological sites around Cusco city (Tambomachay, Pukapucara, Qénqo, and Saqsayhuaman). After lunch, we´ll have time to visit the historical part of the city (Q´oricancha, Catedral, and San Pedro market). Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 6 Cusco Day Off
You will do the 8-kilometer hike of Inkilltambo. We will start at the main square of the city and follow the Inka trail to Inkilltambo. This is the best way to keep adapting your body to the altitude. The afternoon is free for you to explore Cusco before we continue with the tour the next day which will take us to the highest point of the trip. Staying in Cusco is a way for you to acclimatize to the altitude to prepare you for the rest of your sightseeing. Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 7 Palcoyo (Rainbow Mountain) Tour
We will visit one of the most beautiful áreas in the Andes to see three incredible rainbow mountains. We will wake up early for this tour because of the time and distance that it takes to reach Palcoyo where we hike to the highest point of the tour at 4,900 meters. Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 8 Pacchanta (Ausangate) Tour
We will travel to Pacchanta, a little village at the foot of the Ausangate mountain, which is the highest mountain in the region. We will spend one night in this village to meet the local families, enjoy the natural hot springs and prepare for our hike the next day. Overnight in Pacchanta. Do note that the day temperature can vary between 32 degrees (night) to 60 degrees (day) Fahrenheit.
DAY 9 Hike to Seven Lagoons
We will have an early morning breakfast at our accommodation. Thereafter, we start our 16 km hike to the Seven Lagoons in the Ausangate area. After the hike, we will drive back to Cusco. Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 10 Fly home.
TRIP STYLE: The day hikes are rated easy to moderate depending on how acclimatized you are to the high altitude in the region. You will be staying in hotels on a shared basis with a one-night stay at a local family’s home.
