What does “PER” mean at our Elks Lodge?
Members occasionally ask what the title PER stands for and what it means, so here’s a quick explanation.
PER means Past Exalted Ruler. It’s a title held by a member who has previously served a full term as Exalted Ruler of the lodge. That role involves leading the lodge, presiding over meetings, overseeing operations, and representing the lodge in the community.
Once that term ends, a PER does not have authority over lodge operations — the current Exalted Ruler and officers are responsible for running the lodge. However, the PER title remains as recognition of service, leadership, and experience.
Traditionally, PERs are viewed as mentors and resources for current officers and members, helping provide continuity and institutional knowledge. The title isn’t a rank, but it is meant to be treated with courtesy and respect, just as all members and officers should be.
Like everyone else, PERs are expected to support the lodge, uphold its values, and conduct themselves respectfully. Clear understanding helps keep our lodge welcoming, respectful, and strong.
