For the exhibition at MLAG, Årikstad has created new works produced during the winter of 2026, a period marked by experimentation with new techniques and the merging of his painterly and collage-based works on canvas. The exhibition will also feature a new textile work inspired by the artist’s many trips to Naples and Ischia in recent years.
Årikstad’s saturation in Italian environments might be likened to Paul Thek’s sojourn to the Italian island of Ponza in 1968. Like Thek’s salad days abroad, which gave rise to his interpretation of The Diver, Årikstad likewise immerses himself in unusual and unfamiliar sources of inspiration for his assemblage-like approach to sculpture, made from overlooked materials.
Årikstad’s broad and experimental practice encompasses painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, installation, and video in a non-hierarchical approach, where both large and small questions are explored without expecting definitive answers.
Årikstad joins MLAG’s 2026 curatorial theme, A Blue House of Care, which poses questions around hydro-aesthetic positions and future water imaginaries.
In recent years, he has exhibited at the Norwegian Sculptors Society, Prosjektrom Carl Berner, the Autumn Exhibition (Høstutstillingen), VAN ETTEN, the Norwegian Short Film Festival, and Kristiansand Kunsthall. Årikstad lives and works in Kristiansand where, alongside his own artistic practice, he runs the exhibition space PALASS (KRS). He recently completed his term on the national jury for the Autumn Exhibition, where he also served as Chair of the Jury.
Årikstad’s works have been acquired by Kunstsilo, KORO, Bergen Municipality, Brian Eno, Norwegian Hull Club, and Kristiansand Municipality.
