Explore how two rural “Souths” create & maintain their identities through folklore, dialects, landscape-related traditions, and storytelling with Hanna-Reet Ruul & Jude Brothers
Join us for a unique folk singing workshop celebrating shared histories and culture with folk singers Hanna-Reet Ruul (Estonia) and Jude Brothers (Arkansas)!

The workshop is free and open to all willing to sing along! While open to all ages, it should be noted some folk songs will include intense themes around death and grief.

More about the Peripheral Souths project:

Peripheral Souths is a comparative cultural project that explores how two rural “Souths” - South Estonia and the Southern United States - create and maintain their identities through folklore, dialects, landscape-related traditions, and storytelling. Despite geographical differences and distance, both regions occupy a peripheral position within their respective countries and have been shaped by historical traumas, economic marginalization, and cultural stereotypes. Through folk songs, archival research, artistic documentation, and community collaboration, the project aims to show that the history and folklore of our regions are not merely nostalgia but a living system of resilience and self-definition that connects different peoples across the world.
