Printmaking Art Table with Paul Johnson at Perham Area Public Library
Saturday, July 18, 2026
10:30am - 12:30pm
FREE / Drop-ins welcome!
Presented by Kaddatz Galleries in partnership with the Viking Library System, we invite you to join us for this printmaking community art table! During this two-hour session, Paul will guide participants through hands-on printmaking while sharing the legacy and history of renowned regional artist Charles Beck, connecting artmaking with our area's rich cultural heritage. Design and carve your own personalized design from soft linoleum (Adults) or impress styrofoam (Youth). This is a fun introductory activity for participants of all ages to learn about the reductive printmaking process, inking a plate, registering a print and the joy of creativity. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through the Lakes Region Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.
About Paul Johnson:
Paul Johnson worked as a Communication Art and Design instructor at Alexandria Technical & Community College for 21 years. He is a native Minnesotan and principal behind Paul Johnson Design & Illustration. Paul recently completed his 11th Concordia Christmas Concert Mural. Johnson received his education from Minnesota State University Moorhead and was previously employed for 13 years as corporate artist at Banner Health System, Fargo, N.D.
About Charles Beck (1923–2017):
Charles Beck was born in Fergus Falls in 1923 and began drawing in grade school, trading his work for candy and marbles. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead in the 1940s, studying under Cyrus Running and playing football under Sports Director Jake Christiansen. After serving as a Naval Air Force pilot, he graduated from Concordia in 1948 and earned his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1950, then returned to Fergus Falls to work as a sign painter.
In 1953, Beck enrolled at the University of Minnesota, studying under Cameron Booth, Walter Quirt, and Malcolm Myers, where he created his first woodblock print, The Holy Family. He joined the faculty at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in 1960, teaching there for 27 years. Concordia awarded Beck an Honorary Doctorate in 1980 and named its gallery in his honor in 2006.
Beck drew lasting inspiration from the landscape of Otter Tail County, choosing personal interpretation over exact representation in his work. He continued creating art until his death in September 2017 at age 94, and remains one of Minnesota's most recognizable artists.
