Performances of Nuptials

Eleanor Wixson wraps up our season with a Mother's Day weekend of wedding delight. Written by local playwright Judy Simpson Cook and presented in Reader's Theatre, our actors will convince you that you are part of the fun! Nuptials combines "all of the charm of the Old South with the comical frustrations of 'Father of the Bride' and the distinctive personality styles of 'Steel Magnolias.' "When the bride's wishes fly in the face of everyone else's plans, a procession of heartwarming hilarity ensues. This is a tale as old as time and as current as June.
Caroline Gordon is to marry her childhood sweetheart, Mark, in just a few days. Her parents, Barbara and Frank, are busy attending to every detail to ensure the wedding is an event to rival any ever seen in their town. Unfortunately, as the wedding gets closer and everyone else's plans get bigger, Caroline's wishes and dreams for her wedding seem to diminish. Her sister, Kitty, refuses to wear her bridesmaid dress, the caterer can’t cook, the wedding director is difficult and snobbish, the florist is particularly fussy, and the minister is appalled at Caroline's desire to update the vows to the 20th century and withdraws the church as the site for the ceremony. The final straw comes when Mark informs Caroline that not only will his obnoxious best friend, Jerry, be part of the wedding, but he has also invited Jerry to stay at Caroline's house.
Nobody believes Caroline is serious about calling off the wedding, and they continue with preparations. But as she sticks to her guns, they look at their own behavior and begin to make some changes. The family comes to see Caroline’s point of view, and ultimately, everyone except Caroline gathers in the Gordon home for the nuptials. When the strains of “Here Comes the Bride” begin, everyone wonders, will she?
