PERFORMANCE OF GENDER
Sarah McBride — Solo Exhibition
28 October – 11 November 2026 | 10.30am - 3.30pm
FREE EXHIBITION | OLD CUSTOMS HOUSE, FREMANTLE
OPENING NIGHT — FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER | 6–8 PM
What if gender isn't who we are, but something we perform?
Performance of Gender explores gender as something enacted rather than fixed — constructed through clothing, gestures, bodily behaviour and the expectations placed upon us.
Through painting and sculpture, Sarah McBride examines the relationship between gender, clothing, identity and the gaze, with a particular focus on cross-dressing and the experience of stepping outside conventional gender roles.
For those who cross-dress, clothing can become more than something we wear. It can be intimate, tactile and transformative, a way of experiencing and expressing identity through the body. Yet stepping outside accepted expectations can also expose people to ridicule, suspicion, marginalisation and discrimination.
The exhibition considers the tension between visibility and concealment: the private act of dressing and becoming, and the moment that identity is revealed to the gaze of others.
Drawing on Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, 'Performance of Gender' asks us to question what society defines as natural, fixed or expected — and to consider how all of us participate in the ongoing performance of identity.
RAW. INTIMATE. UNFILTERED. FUN.
An exhibition that challenges expectations while celebrating individuality, diversity and the freedom to step outside the role you've been given.
