Penny rugs are a 19th century American folk art, created by thrifty women recycling wool scraps from clothing and blankets. Coins were used for circular appliques stacked in 3 sizes to make decorative and colorful designs.
Step into the quiet rhythm of handwork and create your own heirloom-style penny rug trivet inspired by early American craftsmanship.
In this workshop with instructor and artist Bonnie Faulkner, participants will learn the traditional art of penny rug applique, a 19th century technique using layered wool circles stitched by and with simple embroidery methods.
Historically made from scraps of wool, penny rugs were both useful and beautiful, embodying the Shaker values of simplicity, utility, and thoughtful design.
Each participant will complete a functional wool trivet suitable for a teapot, casserole dish or seasonal table display.
No prior sewing experience is required. Bring scissors and don’t forget your eye glasses!
All other materials will be provided.
Come enjoy a few unhurried hours of purposeful making in community!
Max class size: 8
